直子と野井戸の話をしながら二人で歩いている時に、深く混乱していて不安そうな直子が「私のおねがいをふたつ聞いてくれる？」と言った時の返しである。この返しをされたら、どんなに不安で落ち込んでいる人でも、なんだかホッとしてつい笑ってしまう。死の気配に取り憑かれて、苦しみもがいている直子にいつも寄り添って、あたためてくれるワタナベ君に直子はどれだけ癒されたことだろう。でも、そんなワタナベ君からの絆創膏でも覆いきれないほど、直子の心の傷は、深く重く致命的だったんだろうな。

雨の匂いがする夜に小さな倉庫の中でレイコさんと二人で話しをしている時に、レイコさんが「昨日はどこまで話したっけ？」と言った時の返しである。レイコさんの大きなトラウマになっている悪魔的な少女との出会いの話の続きを聞き出す時に、岩ツバメの巣を取りに行く大冒険の話への切り替えしは、なんともあっぱれである。基本的にさっぱりと明るく落ち着いているレイコさんだが、自分のトラウマのことを話す時は、とてもドキドキして緊張していたに違いない。そんな時に、こんなワクワクする返し。緊張と緩和がキリッと冴えているとても見事な返しである。

「春の熊くらい君が好きだよ。春の野原を君が一人で歩いているとね、向うからビロードみたいな毛なみの目のくりっとした可愛い子熊がやってくるんだ。そして君にこう言うんだよ。『今日は、お嬢さん、僕と一緒に転がりっこしませんか』って言うんだ。そして君と子熊で抱き合ってクローバーの茂った丘の斜面をころころと転がって一日中遊ぶんだ。そういうのって素敵だろ？」

ミドリが「私のことどれくらい好き？」と聞いた時の返しである。ミドリはよく自分のことをどれくらい好きかワタナベくんに尋ねるのだが、たくさんの返しの中で、この春の野原で子熊と転がりっこするくらい好きという返しは群を抜いて素晴らしい。相手から気持ちの度合いを聞かれた時に、未だかつてシーンで伝えようとする人がいただろうか。そもそも女性から「私のことどれくらい好き？」という質問を何度もされたら、げんなりしたり、いらいらしたり、狼狽してしまう男性がほとんどではないだろうか。ワタナベ君のすごいところは、そこで焦ることなく、バリエーション豊かで、可愛らしくユーモアのある返しをさらっとできるところである。ちなみに、ミドリからの同じ質問への返しで「世界中のジャングルの虎がみんな溶けてバターになってしまうくらい好きだ」もとても素敵だ。
